Team India have their first practice session for the Bangladesh ODIs
It was a typical Bangladesh summer day in Mirpur. The sun was out blazing in all its glory after the last few rainy days. It was like a new beginning, befitting the mood in Team India camp. The members of the ODI squad had joined the team the previous evening, including captain MS Dhoni. And the freshness on their faces was palpable. Team India arrived at the stadium in high spirits and began their training for the first ODI against Bangladesh, on June 18, under the scorching 1:30 PM sun. They made their way in the nets and began with a round of stretching followed by a game of football. Stuart Binny, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja were the first to occupy the batting nets. Umesh Yadav and Mohit Sharma were joined by Dhoni and Virat Kohli at the pacers’ net. A good 20 minutes later the batsmen went for a hit. Virat, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Shikhar Dhawan and later Dhoni took turns to face the pacers, spinners and throwdowns. A moment of disrupt came when assistant coach Sanjay Bangar got hit flush on his right knee by a cracking straight drive by Virat, preventing him from giving any further throwdowns to the batsmen. The players rushed to check on Bangar as he received treatment on his knee and bowling coach Bharat Arun took over the throwdown duties. A few men, including Virat, Mohit, Umesh, Shikhar and Suresh Raina, then headed to the main field for fielding drills and catching practice. Dhoni joined them later and jogged a few laps of the field. After a good four hours, the kits were packed off and the team headed to the hotel. As the team went through the paces, a bizarre incident took place. A helicopter flew into the stadium and perched right on the playing field before taking off instantly. Perhaps, it came down as an envoy to what the Mirpur crowd might witness on June 18 – the take-off of a different kind of helicopter, from the bat of MS Dhoni.
