India spinner not worried about pace friendly pitches on offer in the tournament
It has been that kind of a tournament where there haven’t been many runs scored. Yes, India did get to 150-plus in the first game against Bangladesh, but since then teams have found it difficult to score big. They have been presented with seamer friendly conditions with the ball doing a lot early on in the innings with enough pace and bounce. Be it Mustafizur Rahman and Mohammad Amir’s burst in the beginning or Ashish Nehra, Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga’s zing, the pacers have definitely had a good time bowling under these conditions as compared to the spinners. India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin though had no complaints with seaming tracks which has very little to offer to the spinners. Ashwin said adapting to different conditions was important rather than thinking about what is on offer. “As international teams, we should be able to adapt to whatever conditions we are given. It is important to know what conditions are thrown at you since you can’t try and beat the conditions. It is better to adapt to the conditions rather than complaining about it. “It is important to understand that it will not spin a lot here. So, it is more imperative for you to put the ball in right areas and get away with the overs and not go for wickets. In T20s, often the wickets are given by the pressure rather than the skill of the ball. That’s what I look to do in such conditions. Where there is a window to attack, I will definitely do it.” The Indian pacers have been in good form as well. Nehra and Bumrah have been providing timely breakthroughs at the top providing the spinners enough cushion to thrive. Add to that, even all-rounder Hardik Pandya has managed to bowl his quota of overs economically. “It is good if we can punch in as a group,” Ashwin said. “We know Ashish Nehra is an experienced candidate. He has got good ability to do well in the death and Jasprit Bumrah is able to bowl the yorkers- which we might have been missing in the past few years. That definitely has given us an extra sting to our bowling line-up. Our death bowling is much better than it was past.” After two back to back wins, India next face Sri Lanka. They faced a 23-run defeat against Bangladesh the other night and would be itching to get an important win under their belt against India. Sri Lanka do have their set of problems to deal with with their batting not coming to the party. They faltered against Bangladesh chasing 148 and scored just 129 in their first game against UAE. Add to that, Lasith Malinga’s is a doubtful starter against India owing to a knee problem. Ashwin though, was not ready to take their opponents for granted. “Malinga is a champion bowler and it will help any team playing Sri Lanka without him. One thing we wary about Sri Lanka is that they will always punch above their weight and in big games –they raise their standard. They are a very good team.”
