All-round India register clinical win
Summary

After left-arm spinners Rajeshwari and Ekta share seven wickets, captain Mithali adds 97 with Veda to take 1-0 lead

Rajeshwari Gayakwad (four wickets) and Ekta Bisht (three wickets) set up the game for India after West Indies women elected to bat in Mulapadu. Merissa Aguilleira was left stranded on 42 as she strove to keep the innings afloat, while the left-arm spinners bowled the visitors out for 131. Although India women were then left wobbling on 36 for four, Mithali Raj (46) and Veda Krishnamurthy (52) joined hands to rebuild the innings and took the team across the finish line with a 97-run unbroken partnership. Chasing the 132-run target, Smriti Mandhana showed intent from the first over as she lofted Tremayne Smartt over mid-wicket for a boundary. However, she was sent back by Shakera Selman for seven. Opener Deepti Sharma then continued to milk the bowlers as she carried the innings forward with Mona Meshram. But, with the team on 28, the bowler drew an edge from the No 3 bat through to the wicketkeeper; the ball stayed low as it nicked the bat. The fall of the wicket brought Mithali Raj to the crease. The captain looked in good touch as she joined Sharma in carrying the innings forward. She creamed Hayley Matthews to the boundary between cover and point. A bit later though, Afy Fletcher had the opener out lbw with another delivery that stayed low while Matthews followed up with the wicket of Harmanpreet Kaur. With the innings precariously poised at 36 for four, Krishnamurthy joined her skipper in the middle. She too batted with ease to help the scoreboard ticking. The partnership began to take shape as the duo batted in tandem to keep the game hanging in balance. Finding the gaps, they kept the scoreboard ticking. As they closed in on the target, Krishnamurthy struck Selman behind square-leg for a six while Mithali followed up with a boundary to the fine-leg in the next over. Mithali continued to bat with her silken touch and was ably supported by Krishnamurthy in the effort to inch towards the target. She dismissed Matthews to the fence on the onside as she helped rebuild the innings. They took the team to the three-digit mark as they worked their way forward. Krishnamurthy then sealed the victory with a six over long on. Earlier, the West Indies lineup caved in to India’s left-arm spinners. After Mithali introduced spin in the form of Bisht, she wrecked the top-order in her first spell - 5-2-8-3 while Gayakwad claimed four wickets later. Although there wasn’t much turn in the wicket, the bowlers maintained a tight line to keep the opposition in check. Opening the bowling with Jhulan Goswami, Shikha Pandey had given India their first breakthrough in her first over by trapping Shaquana Quintyne lbw to leave the visitors on five for one. Captain Stafanie Taylor then joined Matthews in an effort to shape the innings however, 37 runs later, Bisht ended the partnership. She trapped Hayley leg-before wicket and then disrupted the woodwork of Kycia Knight and Taylor in successive overs. Meanwhile Sharma, who was brought in from the other end was gleaned for runs by the opposition. Before being sent back by Bisht, Knight had struck the off-spinner for a couple of boundaries straight down the wicket and through the on side as the West Indies looked to get themselves back into the game. An over after Bisht had left West Indies on 63 for four, Gayakwad claimed Deandra Dottin without a run added to the score-line. Aguilleira then worked to revive the innings with Shemaine Campbelle and had taken the side to 94 when the latter was run out while looking to squeeze in a second run. A direct hit by Mona Meshram from the square-leg region to the striker’s end left West Indies on 94 for six. The middle-order batter looked to keep the innings in the reckoning. Gayakwad continued to strike at regular intervals. She soon followed up with the wicket of Shakera Selman while Harmanpreet Kaur ran out Fletcher to leave West Indies tottering on 115 for eight in the 36th over. After 16 runs, Gayakwad claimed tail-enders Anisa Mohammed and Tremayne Smartt to wrap up the innings in the 43rd over.
