Batsmen need to come to the party: Sammy
Summary

West Indies skipper feels the side's batting has been 'plagued by dot balls'

Trinidad, June 4: West Indies skipper Darren Sammy’s impressive bowling performance of four wickets for 16 runs could not help the hosts win the first game of the series against India. The skipper is, however, positive that his team will make up for the early loss in future games.

Sammy spoke about the tour’s only T20 in a post-match media interaction.

Excerpts:

On the bowling performance

Yes, we stuck to it at the start with but we let them get 20 runs too many.

On the WI bowling not going as well as he would have liked

Yes, I think we [need] to go back to the drawing board. We back our bowlers to bowl well […]

On whether he was surprised by the pitch conditions

Yeah, a little bit. When I went for the toss I saw my spikes went through [the turf], so it was good. We knew it had a little moisture [in it] so it was a good decision to bowl first. But like I said, we didn’t restrict them to what we wanted.

On playing too many dot balls (54 as compared to 43 dot balls in the Indian innings)

Yes, that’s been something plaguing us; we left ourselves too much room. But it was good to see Twenty20 players like [Christopher] Barnwell and [Marlon] Samuels. If we put [ourselves in] a good position which we kept handy for them, [then] we could challenge the total.

On whether they had enough spin options in their squad for the two ODIs coming up

Yes, I think so. So far the bowling unit has done a good job both in one-day cricket and Test matches. It’s just about the batsmen; they should come to the party. We should play the spinners come Monday and Wednesday. I’d just like to thank the Trinidad public for continuous support to West Indies cricket; they should come out on Monday and support the boys again.
