Summary
Rahul Dravid feels his 32nd Test century was 'satisfying in the game's context'
Jamaica, June 22: Hitting his 32nd century in his 151st Test, Rahul Dravid helped India reach a second innings total of 252 runs. On his way to 112 runs off 274 deliveries, Dravid hit a six off Devendra Bishoo before falling to the spinner later in the innings.
Excerpts from Dravid’s post-match media interaction:
On the century
It was a satisfying one. Satisfying in the context of the game; we needed to get a decent score to put them under pressure. [It felt] pretty good [to score] out there; it was hard work today. I thought they bowled well in the morning today so I had to get through some difficult periods and then got runs later on so it was nice.
On picking the tougher element during the day’s play between the weather and the bowling
It was a combination of both. The conditions obviously were hot out here and for someone like me who is batting for a long time to get a hundred, it’s always a constant battle between the mind and the body as well. It was nice to get through that batting today.
On his thoughts when the eight wicket fell while he was batting on 80 runs
Not too much. I knew Amit [Mishra] can bat. Amit, I thought, showed lot of character [and] lot of guts today and really stuck it out there with me so it was great. He has shown that he can bat and works hard on his batting which is a good thing. I tried to farm the strike a little but not too much. Once he settled in, [I] just let it be as it was.
On hitting a six, the 19th of his Test career
Not bad, at least I’ve hit 19 in Test cricket (laughs).
On whether 326 runs was a defendable total
It’s a good score; this partnership is going to be one that we need to break early in the morning. [Shivnarine] Chanderpaul is a good player [and] Darren Bravo can play. If we get a couple of wickets early then this should be a good score. There is still something in the wicket; we’ve just got to put enough balls in the right areas and be patient. Credit to them [that] they came out today and were positive upfront, but if we keep enough balls in the right areas, then we will create enough opportunities.
