Borren lauds team’s performance
Summary

Dutch captain feels the performance against India has enhanced the side’s confidence

New Delhi, March 9: Post-match, Netherlands skipper Peter Borren spoke to the media about how the game against India had infused confidence in his team.

Excerpts from the conversation.

On the match against India

At 100 for four we [thought] you never know - you get another couple and you’re right in the hunt. Up at the start they got a bit of a flier there - [Virender] Sehwag and [Sachin]Tendulkar. To be at 100 for four was a great effort and I’m so proud of us today for fighting as hard as we did. We talked about giving ourselves a chance with every game that we play and we haven’t done that in the last two games. But today at 100 for four or even 135 for five we had a chance and we just needed a little bit of luck at that stage. [MS]Dhoni and Yuvraj [Singh] batted well again as they did the other night against Ireland where there might have been some trouble [as well].

On batting first largely working for them despite some fumbles midway

Yeah, the boys set us up nicely. We were hitting well. [A score of] 220-230 would have been pretty competitive on this pitch which was not easy to bat on. So it was a shame that we ended up kind of short of it. But we got a few runs in the end that gave us momentum going in. And the comeback in bowling by Pieter Seelar in particular and bowling in the Powerplay too in what was a pretty serious batting line-up [was impressive] - hats off to them

On why he hadn’t bowled before today’s game in the World Cup

I had a side strain which was pretty serious. But I was kind of playing from my place as a batsman alone so I thought a bit [about] pulling my socks up and seeing what I could do and it worked out right tonight.

On whether Netherlands can cause an upset against Bangladesh and Ireland

There is no doubt that the game tonight would give us some confidence for the next two games which are big games for us now. We want to get a win in this competition and we haven’t had one yet. So tonight will give us confidence going in to those two matches.
