India’s trump card Yuvraj Singh speaks about the importance of spinners in the CWC
Nagpur, March 12: Back in form with the bat and the ball, Yuvraj Singh is turning out to be India’s trump card in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2011.
Currently India’s most successful bowler, Yuvraj has spun India to victory and bagged two consecutive Man-of-the-Match awards in the tournament so far. The all-rounder spoke to media briefly ahead of India’s clash against South Africa at Jamtha.
Excerpts from the chat.
On his Man-of-the-Match awards
I’m very happy getting a few [of these awards].
On his batting
I have been planning to [score big] for a while and it’s coming on nicely at the right time. It’s just been a matter of spending time in the middle. There were a few tough situations but I like to bat in tough situations.
On his bowling coming good especially when going through a rough phase
Yeah, bowling was something which was really helping me and giving me my confidence and it has helped me [play] my all round game. [It’s helped me] contribute more towards the team.
On teams tending to rely on spin in the World Cup
Definitely, because Indian’s wickets are slow and spinners definitely help on these wickets. More part-timers, more left-armers, more offies are going to definitely help.
On everyone in the top-order batting getting enough time in the middle apart from him
Yeah, it’s a team sport - if the team plays well, you are only going to win. You can only contribute. It’s important that the team does well.
