Cooper, Robinson crack tons; hosts declare at 398 for six
Canberra, Dec 15: The CA Chairman’s XI made the touring Indians work hard in the field on Day 1 of the warm-up game ahead of the Boxing Day Test between Australia and India. The hosts’ Wes Robinson and Tom Cooper both struck impressive centuries as CA Chairman’s XI declared their innings at 398 for the loss of six wickets.
The Indians began the day on a positive note when pacer Umesh Yadav removed CA Chairman’s captain and opening batsman Ryan Broad (8) in the 10th over. Joe Burns, coming in for the hosts at No. 3, was the next wicket to fall when Pragyan Ojha had him bowled just before lunch. Burns made 21 as the hosts went in for lunch at 53 for two in 26 overs.
However, the second session belonged entirely to the Australians as opener Wes Robinson and Tom Cooper struck half-centuries, denying India any further inroads. Robinson was 80 not out and Cooper was batting on 71 when tea was taken with the CA Chairman’s XI score at 186 for two.
The final session of the day saw both Cooper and Robinson reach their respective centuries. Robinson was eventually dismissed by Ojha, caught by Sachin Tendulkar for an individual score of 143. The opener was involved in a 226-run stand with Cooper; CA Chairman’s XI score was 271 for three at the fall of his wicket.
Alex Doolan (29) put on a 92-run stand with Cooper but was trapped lbw by Umesh Yadav in the last hour of the day’s play. Yadav followed up Doolan’s wicket by getting rid of Glenn Maxwell (0) in the same over (83rd). Vinay Kumar gave the Indians more reason to smile when he had Dean Solway (5) caught by wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha to make it 398 for six.
The Australian side declared their innings immediately after Solway’s dismissal. Tom Cooper, meanwhile, remained unbeaten with a cracking 182 off 194 deliveries (24x4, 3x6).
Brief scores: CA Chairman’s XI 1st innings: 398/6 decl. in 86 overs (Tom Cooper 182*, Wes Robinson 143, Umesh Yadav 3/39, Pragyan Ojha 2/149)
