Spinner says he was unperturbed by questions regarding his selection prior to his warm-up game heroics
Chennai, Feb 16: SpinnerPiyush Chawla, star of the warm-up match against Australia, spoke to the media before the second warm-up game here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Excerpts from the interaction
On the public getting behind Chawla after initial apprehensions about his inclusion in the World Cup squad
It just takes one game to change everything and that’s what happened in the last game. I never listen to the people because they have to say whatever they have to so. I never [pay that any] mind.
On whether the questions regarding his inclusion troubled him at all
Well it wasn’t that difficult because I know that I have done my homework and I have played domestic cricket for almost two and a half years and I have done quite well. So I was aware that whenever I got the chance, I was going to do well.
On the importance of finding the right balance to get the winning momentum going and the areas of improvement before the tournament
Well, the way we guys played in the last game that was like total team effort and we are looking forward to batting well in the next few games. The lower order contributed very well and we have a quality batting line-up and we know they will fire it up.
On whether India would look to bowl first in the warm-up game against New Zealand to give the team some practice with the dew factor at play
Well, you never know. We heard that [the] dew factor comes into play in Bangladesh but it doesn’t make much of a difference because we play at a lot of grounds in India where [that happens] and we are quite habituated to playing in those conditions
On the possibility of his coming good with the bat
I have done quite a lot in domestic cricket but [I’m] yet to fire in international cricket. So I am looking forward to getting some valuable runs for my team.
