Durban, Jan 9: Sachin Tendulkar and Makhaya Ntini were both honoured at the end of the T20I played between India and South Africa at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, here in Durban. Tendulkar received his recognition for his ongoing contribution to the game of cricket, while Ntini, playing his last international game, was honoured by Cricket South Africa for his services to the country.

Speaking on the occasion Tendulkar said, “I take this opportunity to thank the South African cricket board for this wonderful gesture. I am truly humbled and in front of this fabulous crowd it’s been a terrific evening.”

Tendulkar, who was in sparkling form during the Test series, where he brought up his 50th and 51st Test centuries, also addressed the possibility of a return to South Africa on another cricketing tour. “Well, I don’t know about that but at least this evening is really special and thank you so very much to the South African board and Mr Majola,” said the batting legend.

Ntini, who played his last competitive international game, was equally humbled by the occasion. “Hello, Durban. I would like to take this opportunity and to say to each and every single one of you, thank you very much for all your support. It has been a lovely 12 years. And then to my family, my wife, my kid and my mom all of you out there I really appreciate you guys. I don’t know what to say it was absolutely a privilege and honour to play this game with you guys, Sachin. To the South African guys, my boys, I salute you, thank you very much.”

Tendulkar too returned the compliment to Ntini saying, “Makhaya, the great champion. I think you have been a terrific cricketer, terrific competitor and it’s been a pleasure to play against you. Till the last ball you didn’t allow me to relax but at least now I can relax that you are not playing anymore. He’s been a true role model. Congratulations for a wonderful career and all the very best for the future.”
