WI’s opener Barath feels his team needs to take early wickets on Day 3 of the Sabina Park Test
Jamaica, June 22: West Indies opener Adrian Barath top-scored for his team with 64 runs in the first innings of the Sabina Park Test against India before being sent back by Praveen Kumar. The 21-year old spoke to the media about the match so far and the hosts’ plan for outplaying India.
Excerpts from his media-interaction:
On the match so far
The third day will hold the key, especially the morning session. It will be important for us to go down and get early wickets. Virat Kohli is pretty set at the wicket at the moment. It’s important that we get Rahul Dravid. He is really ‘The Wall’ for India. If we get him [Dravid], it will be [an] easier job. The key is the morning session.
On Fidel Edwards
It is good for him getting this opportunity. He has had a long break in cricket and he is really eager. He has proven a point here at Sabina Park. Definitely the Indian batsmen will have a challenge.
On Devendra Bishoo
Devendra Bishoo has come on pretty fast in the past couple of months - from the World Cup into the Pakistan series and now the Indian series. He got three wickets yesterday [first innings], and then he came and got a wicket today again [second innings].
On how the track is likely to behave on the third day of the match
It’s definitely going to turn a bit but I think the batsmen [are] really up to the challenge. We play as a team and I think every batsman would go there and play [their] role for the team and I hope we can get a better second innings. We probably would be chasing a [good] score, and [will] go out there with high hopes to get whatever total.
On striking form immediately after an injury lay-off
It is better for me to spend some time in the middle. I batted some 100 balls for my half-century so I really had to work hard for that half-century. Unfortunately I couldn’t carry on and have a big one [innings]. I was eyeing a big score. It would have been nice for me and my team if I could carry on [and ] get a bigger total. But I think Praveen Kumar bowled well, especially with the older ball. We haven’t seen Praveen much with the older ball and we really need to study him for our second innings.
