Team India removes Ponting, Paine to leave Test in

Bengaluru, Oct 12: The Bengaluru Test remained poised as Australia ended Day 4 against India at 202 for 7. Nathan Hauritz (8) and Mitchell Johnson (7) remained unbeaten and extended Australia’s lead to 185 after the hosts were dismissed for 495 earlier in the day.

The visitors were pushed on the back-foot when they were reduced to 131 for 5 but skipper Ricky Ponting scored a masterful 72 to help them reach a respectable score. Ponting’s 50-run partnership with Tim Paine ended when he was given out LBW to Zaheer Khan.

Paine was caught behind in the next over off S Sreesanth for 23 to reduce Australia to 185 for 7.

Nathan Hauritz and Mitchell Johnson had stitched together a 17-run partnership by close of play.

Australia had got off to a blazing start in their second innings scoring at 5 an over before Pragyan Ojha trapped Shane Watson LBW for 31 with the team’s score at 58. The visitors lost Simon Katich (24) to Harbajhan with Ojha scalping Michael Clarke for 3 at the other end to leave them gasping at 65 for 3.

Ponting and Michael Hussey added 61 for the fourth wicket before Hussey was trapped by left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha for 20. Marcus North fell soon afterwards for 3 bowled by Harbhajan Singh.

Earlier in the day, Sachin Tendulkar (214) completed his sixth Test double century. Tendulkar departed when he dragged a Peter George delivery onto the stumps and Australia ran through the lower-order which could add only 60 runs to their overnight score.

Shane Watson dismissed Harbhajan Singh and George got the better of Zaheer Khan before Nathan Hauritz removed Mahendra Singh Dhoni (30) and Sreesanth.
