Champion feels it’s selfish to retire when in top form
Mumbai, Mar 26: Fresh from his landmark 100th ton, Sachin Tendulkar has put all doubts of retiring from international cricket to rest. Speaking at a press conference organised by World Sports Group, his managers, Tendulkar said that the decision to retire would be selfish given that he was still at the top of his game.
"I feel those who say you should retire at the top are selfish because when you are at the top, you should serve the country instead of retiring.”
Tendulkar went on to add that the decision to retire would be his alone, “I feel that the retirement [issue] is something I should decide, because the decision to start was [also] not decided by someone else. Those who are advising me about retirement did not bring me in the team.”
Tendulkar, who has starred in six previous ODI World Cups, didn’t even rule out the possibility of playing the 2015 ICC ODI World Cup.
“When this question was asked in 2007 [about the 2011 World Cup], it was tough for me to answer. It’s the same situation. I don’t know what to say about 2015. If people keep praying for me, that would mean a lot to me. I will keep trying and the rest is in God’s hands. I just want to enjoy the game,” Tendulkar said.
Speaking at a press conference organised to celebrate his 100 international centuries, the Little Master turned philosophical.
“Sometimes, things happen in your life which you can't explain. You look at solutions and put question marks and ask why is this happening, but you just don't find answers. Eventually, you look at the scenarios when you haven't batted well and still ended up scoring big runs. What could be the reason? Luck,” he said about the long gap between his 99th and 100th international tons.
Tendulkar clarified that events being held to commemorate his achievement were not just to celebrate his 100th century that came in India’s defeat, but all the work he had put in over his career.
"I don't think we are celebrating just that [Asia Cup encounter against Bangladesh]. Where I have reached today, it has taken me 23 years to be at that place. Results are very important for me. Yes, it was a disappointment for us to not make the final, and let me tell you there was no major celebration after I scored a hundred as we had lost the match."
