‘Didn’t score enough runs’
Summary

WI captain Darren Sammy says his team didn’t post a sizeable total to put India under pressure

Trinidad, June 6: Having lost the first ODI against India at the Queen's Park Oval, West Indies skipper Darren Sammy was a disappointed man. In a post-match media conference Sammy agreed that the batting needs to improve and hoped that the team will come good soon.

Excerpts:

On the match

We didn’t score enough runs. We kept taking wickets but the total wasn’t enough to keep the pressure on them.

On whether they should have chased given that batting has been an issue

We looked at the wicket. It did a bit the day before. So, [we] wanted to have the best of the wicket, so that we can go out there and put a good, challenging total. We have not been able to do that batting first.

On the playing the slow bowling and the help of the batting consultant

I think when you are out of nick and you play on pitches that favour the opposition, it is difficult to get yourself going. Desmond Haynes, our batting consultant, has been doing a good job. It’s about getting confidence and executing our game.

On what is the plan heading into the next game

We will have to put up a better display and keep believing in ourselves. Hopefully, [we will] do well.
