Don’t need on-field chatter: Arthur
Summary

Australia coach would rather have the cricket do the talking

Perth, Jan 15: As Australia look to take an unassailable 3-0 lead against India at the WACA, coach Mickey Arthur is pleased with the disciplined performance delivered by his boys. Australia are in the driver’s seat as the match enters Day 3 with India’s batting line-up struggling against the hosts’ pace attack in testing conditions.

Arthur discussed his team’s tactics in a brief interview with the media before the start of play. Excerpts:

On the third Test

They have set it up nicely; we just have to maintain our hunger, maintain our enthusiasm, maintain our discipline and hope that the bowlers will once again come through for us.

On whether the toss played a part in the game

[...] It was a good toss to win. It was a good wicket to bowl first on. You still have to go out there and do your part [...] They went up there and did it. I think that you are never in on the pitch and I think that’s been shown through the game. That’s why I think that innings of David Warner’s was outstanding.

On the absence of on-field chatter from the hosts

I have said to the guys that I don’t think we need to chat. I think our cricket is a powerful message in its own way. I want us to have a presence. I think our body language has been very strong in all disciplines but you don’t have to chat. Chat has its role now and again but I’d rather see strong body language and send a message to the opposition team through our cricket and the way we play.

On whether he was satisfied that no-one from the famed Indian batting line-up had been able to score a hundred in the series so far

It’s still a fantastic batting line-up. I think we bowled well. Our bowlers have executed the plans we have had against every batsman particularly well. And we’re going to keep doing that. There hasn’t been a hundred scored yet but […] I hope we can continue that trend today because there are players out there who can get that hundred. We have got a huge amount of respect for the Indian batting line-up [...].
