Summary

Legendary No. 3 batsman approaches 13,000-run mark

Kolkata, Nov 14: India’s legendary No. 3 batsman Rahul Dravid brought up his 36th Test ton in the post-tea session of the second Test being played between India and West Indies here at the Eden Gardens. This was Dravid’s fifth Test century this calendar year and the first he has hit at home in 2011.

Dravid, who walked in to bat today at the fall of Virender Sehwag’s wicket with India on 66, played a chanceless innings to bring up his century. Dravid put on 83 for the second wicket with Gautam Gambhir (65) and was also involved in a 56-run stand with Sachin Tendulkar (38) for the third wicket, taking India to a position of strength. Dravid and VVS Laxman had put on an unbeaten 100-run partnership at the time Dravid scored his century.

Dravid’s latest century still leaves him placed fourth among batsmen with most centuries in Test cricket. Sachin Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (40) and Ricky Ponting (39) have all scored more centuries than Dravid.

However, Dravid, who started this innings needing another 140 runs to become only the second batsman ever after Sachin Tendulkar to scale 13000 Test runs, is most likely to bring up this landmark during the course of this series.

Dravid, who finished India’s disastrous tour of England earlier this year as joint Man-of-the-Series (along with Stuart Broad), has scored a century each at Kingston (112), Lord’s (103*), Nottingham (117) and The Oval (146*) this year.

Dravid scored his latest hundred off 179 deliveries by whipping Kemar Roach down to the square leg boundary for a four. This is his fourth Test century at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
