Execution is the key: Morkel
Summary

SA speedster Morne Morkel says his team eats, sleeps and trains with the word ‘execution’ in mind

Centurion, Dec 16: Unplayable for most of Day 1 of the first Test between India and South Africa, Morne Morkel singled out the wicket of Rahul Dravid as special amongst his tally of four. After a satisfying day’s play Morkel said that his team had laid special emphasis on execution and that once Graeme Smith won the toss, it was all about landing the ball in the right areas to get the visitors on the back-foot.

Excerpts from a media interaction.

On the delayed start on Day 1

I think first of all we need to thank the groundsmen. I saw a glimpse of what the outfield looked like from my bed and to get out there in the park was great. I think we knew that the toss was always going to be important. There was pressure on us to get the ball in the right areas but to get the ball in the right areas to get the wickets was very satisfying.

On the importance of the execution of plans

I think we eat, sleep and train with the word ‘execution’ [in mind]. I think it is the most important thing on a wicket like this to get the ball in the right areas. Sometimes you can get carried away because there is a bit of movement [in the pitch]. It was important for us to keep it calm and cool [and] execute and bowl in decent areas.

On his new-ball partnership with Dale Steyn

I think there has been a lot said and written about myself and Dale [Steyn] for the past couple of months about being the best opening bowling pair in the world. It is always a bit of pressure. I think the important thing for me and him is not to get caught up in that and focus on our role and job. It is our duty to set the tone and that is what we are trying to do.

On Rahul Dravid’s wicket

[Rahul] Dravid is quite special. He is a quality player. I am not taking anything away from all the other players but he is good.

On the high praise coming in for him and Dale Steyn

I think it is important to keep yourself level-headed and not get carried away because we know how quickly things can turn. [Dale and I] are just enjoying bowling with the new ball together. We are also close friends that makes it more special.

On the impact of today’s spell on the game

We wanted to lay the first punch, the first blow and we won the toss and we did that. I think it sends a good message that we will not stand back as a bowling unit. [Taking those] wickets was very satisfying.
