Frustrating to get out in fifties: Rogers
Summary

Australian opener rues not converting his last three half-centuries into tons

Going into the first Test of the 2014 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Chris Rogers’ place in the Australian Test team was under question. In six innings since his century against South Africa in February, Rogers had failed to get past 50 runs. His scores of 9 and 21 in the Adelaide Test mounted more pressure on the opening batsman. When he felt under the pump, Rogers emerged fighting, scoring three consecutive half-centuries – two scores of 55 in Brisbane and 57 in the first innings of the MCG Test. While he is glad to have broken the runless rut, Rogers was disappointed at not being able to convert the fifties into hundreds. “Just frustrated really,” he said. “Three scores in the 50s is good in some respects and it is also disappointing because as an opener you do the hard work and put yourself in a position to get a good score. “To get out like that was disappointing, I felt good today, my feet were going and I had a real desire to get a big score,” Rogers said about the poke of his bat that resulted in MS Dhoni holding on to a nick behind the wicket. While Rogers wished he can convert his starts into big scores, he was elated for his captain, Steve Smith, who is enjoying a golden run with the bat. After scoring centuries in the first two Tests, Smith was unbeaten on 72 at stumps on the first day at the MCG. Rogers described Smith’s form as “Above and beyond”. “He’s phenomenal to watch and it’s great to be a part of (his journey), he’s just growing day by day. It’s scary to think how good he can be. He knows he belongs and he knows he’s among the best players in the world at the moment,” Rogers said.
