Future looks great: Sammy
Summary

WI captain Darren Sammy is buoyed by the 103-run win against India

Antigua, June 13: After losing the first three matches, West Indies have won the fourth of the five-match ODI series by beating India comprehensively at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. The hosts, battered through the first three games, are now playing for pride, a situation they had found themselves in against Pakistan recently.

A visibly happy West Indies captain Darren Sammy and Man-of-the-Match Anthony Martin spoke to the media in a post-match interaction.

Excerpts

Darren Sammy:

On the 103-run victory against India

We did a lot of things better in this game. Throughout the series we have been improving - today we posted 250 [runs] on the board. The bowlers throughout the series have been collecting wickets early on and today we were in that similar situation but we handled it differently. We had a different mindset and the guys put the ball in the right areas and we got the wickets we needed.

On their batting

[Lendl] Simmons, as you see, came back; he’s been among our runs-getter. Also, coming through in the end, [Kieron] Pollard played a good innings and [Andre] Russell and Carlton Baugh [had a] good partnership with Pollard. But somewhere in the middle we keep losing track. But the guys are aware of what’s at stake and as long as we keep improving, we’ve still got a young team and we [are] still trying to find that winning mindset. Today it was really good to see the guys putting on a team effort. We showed a lot of character again and it was good to see us winning in the end.

On Andre Russell

Russell is a total team man. Before the last game I spoke with him and he said to me, “Skipper, I am going to give you my utmost best”. When he went out to bat he saw the situation and he really showed character. In the World Cup, he came in as well [and did] things. He is quite young, we see a bright future [for him]. We have quite a few youngsters; [Devendra] Bishoo as well has come on board. The future looks great, we just have to keep looking [forward] and improving.

On the last ODI in Jamica

[We were in a] similar situation [in the] Pakistan series so we know what it is to win. Hopefully in Jamica we can end this series on a winning note as well.

Anthony Martin:

On whether playing at home helped

The conditions I know very well so it helped me a lot and I would like to say thanks a lot to the crowd for supporting me.

On whether his international selection has been a dream come true

I have been looking forward to it and it’s finally here so I am going to do the best that I can.

On his bowling strategy during important phases in a match like today’s

Well, [I stuck to the right] mindset when I came on to bowl. I just decided to keep it very tight and not allow the batters to do what they want to do.
