Guwahati, Nov 28: Gautam Gambhir, who registered first win with the captain’s armband, on Sunday credited centurion Virat Kohli and the bowlers for setting up the 40 runs win in the first One Day International against New Zealand.

Gambhir said his teammates rose to the occasion and played according to the game plan with Virat Kohli performing outstandingly well in the match.

Excerpts:

On first win as captain:

I think leading the side for the first time – it is a great feeling. Getting the first win under your belt is always a special feeling.

On his boys:

I think everyone chipped-in. Everyone did their job. The five batsmen chipped-in with Virat [Kohli] batting exceptionally well. And that was the plan- that one needs to go out and score a hundred and that is what exactly Virat did. I am very happy with everyone’s performance.

On the track and toss:

I think we would have definitely bowled first on this wicket as it had something for the bowlers. We always felt that we need to have wickets in hand. The kind of batting we have we can accelerate at any time. We have some big hitters in the side. So the game plan was try and bat through the first 10 overs and not lose any wickets.

On his bowlers and the next match:

I think I am taking one game at a time. I am looking forward to the next game. I want to say that R Ashwin bowled beautifully, Ashish Nehra bowled well and Munaf looked good. All the batsmen did well and Virat was just outstanding.
