Gambhir’s knock best ever: Vettori
Summary

New Zealand captain terms Gautam Gambhir’s century as the best ODI knock he has seen

Jaipur, Dec 1: New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori on Wednesday admitted that his bowlers let him down in the 8-wicket drubbing from India in the second One Day International.

Vettori said his bowlers failed to complement the batsmen who played well on a wicket that was tough to bat on initially and termed Gautam Gambhir’s hundred as one of the best ODI’s knock he has witnessed.

Excerpts:

On his team’s total of 258 runs:

Yeah, it was a good score. The way our batters batted although it was a tough wicket early on. I think it was a competitive score but we bowled extremely poorly.

On Gautam Gambhir’s knock of 138 runs:

I think it was the best One day innings I have seen. He got in control right from the start and put us under pressure. The way he controlled the match, he never really let us comeback.

On what New Zealand could have done differently:

Bowl better. I think it is as simple as that. We had spoken about bowling in Indian conditions and we didn’t get it right and he [Gautam Gambhir] made us pay tonight.

On giving away 29-4s:

Yeah, most of them came from width. When you do that on a slowish wicket it is incredibly difficult to tie up the run-rate. It was even difficult when we got a couple of wickets.

On the next ODI:

Well I think it is still about winning the games. If we get caught up in the history of what has happened then there is no coming back. We are off to Baroda and we have to be as positive and fresh as we can be.

On Brendon McCullum’s fitness:

Yeah, it will be great. If Brendon [McCullum] is fit he brings a lot of balance to the side and isalso an attacking option with the bat.
