Gratifying to dismiss Sehwag: Swann
Summary

Off-spinner pleased with the opportunity to bowl to the top order

London, Aug 21: Having bowled without much success through the first three Tests, Graeme Swann finally found form in the final match, picking a total of five wickets by the end of Day 4. Swann’s performance allowed England to enforce the follow-on in anticipation of a series sweep against the floundering India.

Excerpts from Swann’s media interview:

On whether the team’s performance on Day 4 was perfect

Not perfect but a good day. We knew that we had to get rid of five wickets in the first Indian innings, and when we went out [in the second innings], we said we can get two or three wickets, we can try and do our job and we have done that, so we are very happy.

On bowling with a ball which was just six overs old

The seamers were tired after bowling at the end of the first [Indian] innings [and] the ball was hard and it spins more when it is hard. So it was a chance to try and get to [Rahul] Dravid before he really gets his eye in because as he has shown all summer, once he gets going he is very hard to stop.

On Virender Sehwag’s dismissal

For an off-spinner it is [difficult] to try and get through somebody’s [guard]. You don’t get that many [opportunities]; three or four per season maybe and to get a player of his stature and his ability - that is personally very gratifying.

On RP Singh’s footmarks having helped his bowling

There are those odd bowlers around the world [whose] footmarks are in the right place. He [RP Singh] is one of them; Dougie Bollinger for Australia, I love it when he plays. We have gone on all summer and this has been a great day for me to bowl. It’s nice here at the Oval, which normally turns anyway. There is a bit of rough outside the off-stump for me.

On his father playing for the England Over 60s side

He’s been picked for England Over 60s and he got 99 [runs] against Australia; he was out on the last ball, which is a shame as it would have been his first international hundred. He is a fine cricketer in himself.

On England pressing for victory on Day 5

Of course we need to shift that little chap [Sachin] Tendulkar as soon as we can. Even though the world wants to see him get a hundred, the eleven England players would rather see the back of him, to be honest, because we know how good a player he is. Then we’ve got to bowl well the whole day because the Indians bat low down and we need to get into that tail as quickly as possible.
