Australian vice captain says he has not thought about leading the team in first Test
Michael Clarke joined the Australian team at practice session on Saturday morning after bidding an emotional goodbye to his deceased friend, Phillip Hughes. As clouds of doubt hover over his availability for the first Test against India owing to his hamstring injury, his deputy, Brad Haddin is confident the captain will be fit to take field at the Adelaide Oval on Tuesday. "Michael had a good hit today. He is going to back up this afternoon, and be involved in our session. So I haven't thought about captaining in the first Test to be honest,” Haddin said. "Michael's been strong for the team for a long time. I think he's a tremendous captain and we want our captain out there playing. All signs are that he's going in the right direction, and like everyone else, we want Michael out there leading our team in the first hour of play here in Adelaide," Haddin said the players are happy to be back on the cricket field after the emotionally tumultuous week or so. "We get back to playing the game we love. I don't think we need to complicate it any more than that: you get back to playing cricket. "We all love the game. That's why we're all here now. It's a great game and been good to so many of us. Our job is to go and play cricket, and to enjoy that. We need the support of the Australian public and everyone leading into this first Test. We're looking forward to playing and we need the help of everyone to enjoy the moment and just enjoy the game of cricket.” Speaking about the series against India, Haddin said the change of venue for the first Test, from the bouncy Brisbane to the flatter Adelaide, will have an impact on Australia’s plans and strategies. "It's obviously a different venue and you have different plans to get batsmen out,” he said. But it's a good cricket wicket here. I don't think you need to read too much into what venue we're playing at. It's about doing our job and making sure we're ready for the conditions here." While Clarke is nursing his hamstring, Haddin has just recovered from a shoulder injury which he sustained during the Test series against Pakistan in the UAE. Despite not having played a match after having returned, the 37-year-old wicketkeeper said he was confident of doing well in the Test series. "I wouldn't have come back to play if I wasn't confident in it. I've got no ill effects. All systems go.”
