Harbhajan 'Harbhy' Singh says he still has a lot of wickets left in him
Dominica, July 8: When Harabhajan Singh picked up the wicket of Carlton Baugh on Day 2 of the Windsor Park Test, he became just the second offspinner to take 400 wickets in Test cricket. Speaking to Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar on the official broadcast channel at the end of play on Day 2, Harbhajan claimed that he still had the ability to take many more wickets in Test cricket provided he can keep himself fit.
Excerpts from the conversation:
On how he feels about his accomplishment:
I’m quite happy that I’ve got 400 wickets now. It was there on my mind since I came to the Caribbean. But now it’s done. I just want to keep working hard on my game. I still have a lot of wickets left in me. I just have to make sure that I keep myself fit and be ready for the games in the future.
On joining fellow Indian bowlers Kapil Dev and Anil Kumble who are already members of the 400-wicket club
I’m really excited to be on that list. They did wonders not just for Indian cricket but made a big name in world cricket as well. I’ve been a big follower of all the legends who have crossed 400 wickets. I’m really honoured and really happy to be part of that list.
On whether he remembers his first wicket in Test cricket
Yes sir, I do remember my first wicket in Test cricket. It was Greg Blewett bowled on my tenth ball in Test cricket.
On whether he remembers his 100th wicket
No.
On his 200th wicket
I think it was [Charles] Coventry. 300th was my best friend Ricky Ponting [laughs] and 400th was [Carlton] Baugh. God knows who will be the 500th. Let’s hope I get there someday.
On his new nickname ‘Harbhy’
I don’t know why they’ve been changing my name. I don’t hear too many things when I’m bowling. But yes, sometimes when I go to see the replays and stuff I do get to hear this name ‘Harbhy’ which has been given by the Australians to me. Most of the Australians call me Harbhy because it makes my name short. But I still feel ‘Bhajji’ was better.
