ODI captain Suresh Raina admits he needs to spend time in the middle
Jamaica, June 16: Having won the first three games of the five-match ODI series, India were unable to make it a clean sweep, losing the last two games to an exultant West Indies. Captain Suresh Raina was nonetheless complimentary about his team after the last defeat and especially commended the efforts of Rohit Shrama, Amit Mishra and Parthiv Patel.
Speaking at a post-match media-conference, Raina reflected on his own inability to come good with the bat and the series in general.
Excerpts from the media-interaction:
On the disappointing end to the series
They played really well in the last two games [but] still we have won the series; [let us] just enjoy the moment. Credit goes to all the bowlers, they bowled really well, especially Amit Mishra. Rohit [Sharma] showed responsibility and Virat [Kohli] batted really well. Parthiv [Patel] showed real talent. I am very happy with the boys.
On the number of runs he reckoned India fell short of in the fifth ODI
25–30 [runs]. But I think they bowled really well later on. Virat and Rohit batted really well specially till the 35th over. [Andre] Russell came and bowled really well.
On what was going through his mind as captain regarding his last four dismissals
I was looking good but I have to spend some more time [in the middle]. I can’t just go and play big shots. I will look to have a couple of sessions with the coach and hopefully I will get runs in the Test series.
On the positives from this series
The boys looked really disciplined throughout the series; we started with Twenty20. Amit Mishra and [Ravichandran] Ashwin, Harbhajan [Singh], PK [Praveen Kumar] and Munaf [Patel] bowled really well. Apart from the bowlers, the batsmen showed responsibility. At the same time, credit goes to the new coach [Duncan Fletcher]. Trevor Penny, we had a good fielding session with him. Eric [Simmons] has done really well throughout the World Cup.
On whether the team was prepared for the first Test match that will be played at the same venue
We are [ready] to play but I am not sure about the senior players. They are going to come here and probably have a practice session. Still, we have three–four days and hopefully we will do well in the Test matches too.
