I am hungry for runs: Sharma
Summary

Man-of-the-match Rohit Sharma says he is happy to have started the series on a good note

Trinidad, June 6: Making the most of the opportunity presented to him, Rohit Sharma scored a patient 68 off 75 balls to guide India to victory against West Indies in the first ODI at the Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain.

The 24-year old batsman from Mumbai showed his mettle as he stuck it out in the middle despite suffering from cramps towards the end of the innings. He was involved in two important partnerships, a 43-run stand with Shikhar Dhawan and then an 80-run partnership with skipper Suresh Raina.

Rightfully, Sharma was adjudged the man-of-the-match after which he spoke to the media.

Excerpts from the interaction:

On how difficult was it to settle in

It was quite difficult because the wicket was turning and it was not easy to play a shot. So, it was very important to take some time and play your shot. And that’s exactly what I did today.

On whether it is difficult to shift from Twenty20 cricket to 50-over cricket

Not really. [I’m] used to it now. Even last year we played IPL and we came to West Indies for four game series. So we have [got] used to it now. It is very important, I think, [for] each individual - how he adapts and I am sure each and every one is ready and up for it.

On what he thinks he needs to do to cement his place in the Indian team in all formats

Just keep scoring runs. I am very happy [to have] started the tournament on a good note. So I just need to carry this form in the coming games as well.

On whether he is hungry for runs

Yes, of course. If you are playing cricket, I don’t think anybody is not hungry. I am very much hungry and, hopefully, people will see that in this tournament.
