Summary

Named the best U-19 cricketer, the youngster from Patiala is keen to impress

Consistent performances for the Punjab Under-19s earned Anmolpreet Singh the M.A. Chidambaram Trophy for the best Under-19 cricketer 2014-15. A solid middle-order batsman, he piled on 1154 runs at an average of 144.25 in nine matches with five hundreds in the season and was also named in the India U-19 squad in 2015. Reflecting on his impressive season, Anmolpreet said, “It was my best season and I am really happy that I am getting the award. I will try and worker harder so that I can repeat my performances. The award means a lot because I would always think about winning an award like this.” While he was piling on runs for the team, the youngster also led the Punjab U-19’s into the Cooch Behar Trophy finals where they finished as runners-up. A handy off-spinner, Anmolpreet comes from a family of sportsmen. While his brother and cousins too play cricket and even other sports, his father has represented India in handball. “My cousin would play cricket in college. I would go with him and that’s how I stared playing. My father Sardar Satvinderpal Singh is a handball coach and I would accompany him, but since I loved cricket more, I took it up,” he said. Anmolpreet, who started playing cricket competitively in 2007 added, “My father would guide me on how to go about things, but I have been coached by different coaches at different academies.” His batting however, flourished at the Army Ground in Patiala. “I started getting more matches there and then I got a coach who also guided me. He taught me the basics. From there I shifted to the Dhruv Pandove stadium where I still train.”

Talking about his training routines, Anmolpreet said, “I practice for long hours. I like to practice till late in the night and now I have also set up nets at home.”

The youngster who also plays for India U-19 said he loves interacting with Rahul Dravid, coach of the U-19 side. “Getting coached by Rahul Dravid sir is a wonderful experience. We have had lots of discussions with him. We try to implement and work on the things that he tells us.” The youngster’s next big assignment is the ICC Cricket World Cup. Speaking about the opportunity, Anmolpreet said, “The U-19 ICC Cricket World Cup matches are very important for my career and I am looking forward to them. I will try and do my best and make the most of the opportunity.”
