I fit in everywhere: Rahane
Summary

Indian batsman asks bowlers to be patient on Day 5

Indian batsman Ajinkya Rahane said that his team will have to bowl with patience on the fifth day in their pursuit of making the series 1-1 in the second cricket Test against Sri Lanka. Chasing 413, Sri Lanka finished day four at 72 for two, needing another 341 runs for victory, while India need to get eight more wickets for a win. Excerpts: On batting at No. 3 and his favourite batting position I fit in everywhere, so my aim is to bat wherever the team feels it is right. But batting at number three gave me a lot of happiness. After getting out cheaply in the first innings, I was happy with the way I applied myself. I think my focus and concentration level was very good in the second innings, and as a Test batsman that hunger for runs was there. I am happy to bat at number three and score a hundred for my team. On what he did differently in the 2nd innings batting at No. 3 When I got out in the first innings, I was very hurt. I worked with batting coach Sanjay Bangar and we came earlier and did some throw downs. So his hard work and Ravi Shastri's inputs really helped me in the second innings. My aim was to play as close to my body as possible and later on just build my innings. So I was just looking to play the ball, take my time and once I was set I wanted to play a long innings. On his first Test hundred in the sub-continent This hundred will give me great confidence because conditions were pretty challenging. It was hot out there and it was very challenging to focus on that moment. When I was batting on 82, on the lunch time with Rohit, my plan was to just take single and go to other end. It was hot out there and I wanted to play a long innings because in cricket one wicket and anything can happen. We wanted to build a partnership and that’s what we did. On technical adjustments Technically, I don’t think there is much difference but mentally as I said it was important to play as close to the body as possible, initially at least for the first 10-15 overs. The ball does a bit but after that there was no movement here. So the wicket was also getting slower here and so once I got set I decided that I just had to play a big innings for my team. Batting at no. 3 and 5 there is no big technical change that is required. As far as I see my batting is concerned. But mental adjustment is really important when you bat in subcontinent and abroad. It’s important to adjust in your mind and important to play according to conditions and situations. On Rohit Sharma batting at No. 5 I feel even Rohit is open minded. He also accepted that challenge in a positive way. It is important to have a positive mindset as a player, especially when you are representing your country. Rohit and I have played many games together, so we know each other’s game very well. Today also when we were batting, our motto was to build a partnership and play till tea time. It’s important to have an open mindset. On the batting strategy Our intent has always been positive. Even in the first innings, Virat and Rahul played very positively. In the second innings, we wanted to be in the present but at the same time, we wanted to dominate their bowling. I think the partnership between Vijay and myself gave us that momentum. Virat and Rohit came in and took their time. I feel that intent has to be there, results will follow automatically. On his team’s plan There was no major plan. We just wanted to play session by session. We didn’t want to think too far. We knew if we played normal cricket, runs would come. As a batsman, I didn’t feel the need to take any risks as the singles and doubles were coming. The running between the wickets was very good. After tea is when we deliberated upon setting them a target and how much time we should be giving our bowlers to take 10 wickets. 400-odd runs gives enough time and space for our bowlers to have a crack at them. On standing in as captain for an over It felt very good to captain the side. A wicket too fell in that one over! I have been playing Tests since 2013 and my only goal has been to learn as much as possible. I got to learn a lot since my Test debut, as a cricketer and as a person.
