‘I was not nervous’
Summary

Kirk Edwards says his maiden Test century was free of jitters

Dominica, July 10: Kirk Edwards became the 13th West Indian cricketer to hit a century on Test debut with an innings of 110 against India in the third Test at Dominica. Speaking to the official broadcast channel, Edwards said that he do not feel any nervousness during the momentous innings. He simply stuck to the task at hand.

Excerpts from the conversation:

On hitting a century on debut:

It feels great. Thank you very much.

On how he felt at the start of his innings when West Indies were in trouble

I was not nervous. I just knew that I had my work cut out. I just stuck to the task.

On the partnership with Shivanrine Chanderpaul

Obviously, it’s a great feeling to have a guy like Shiv with you at the crease. He is full of experience. It was a pleasure playing with him.

On the discussion he had with Rahul Dravid at Barbados last week

It was helpful. I looked up to him from the time that I was a small boy growing up playing cricket. I was privileged to have a conversation with him, pick up a few tips.

On going from 99 to 100 (Edwards almost ran himself out)

It was probably a rush of blood. I know I’m quick so I backed myself to get in but I was forgetting that Shiv was the guy I was running with. It worked out pretty well.

On handling the increased pressure now that he has got a 100 on debut

That is not pressure. I just go and give every innings hundred percent. So I won’t feel any pressure.

On having scored his maiden hundred in front of his father

Yes, it was special for me. He deserved to see me make my 100 on debut. He’d been there from the beginning and I’d like him to be there at the end.
