Australian opener talks about his successful game plan
Perth Jan 13: David Warner smashed an unbeaten 104 off 80 balls after the Indian batsmen capitulated for a paltry 161 runs on Day 1 of the Test match in Perth. The opener spoke about his batting to the TV broadcast channel after the end of day’s play.
Excerpts:
On his innings
It’s fantastic to score some runs and credit to our bowlers [for] keeping the Indians to 160 and for us to finish off at none for 149.
On his blistering innings
It’s the same as how Viru [Virender Sehwag] sometimes comes out there all guns blazing. Sometimes he doesn’t move his feet and he can put the [bowlers away] to any part of the park. […] If the ball’s there, you’ve got to hit it. I felt pretty good out there. You’ve got to be in on this wicket because there is a bit of green. I hope that tomorrow I can keep continuing that.
On his statement in an interview about lacking self-belief going into the Perth Test
I have been working hard in the nets. I have been wondering how I am going to score runs […] I was a little bit down in a way but now I have confidence and as a player I try to come out very confident, not arrogant, and take the game away from the opposition.
On whether getting to his century with a six was part of the plan
It wasn’t, but I knew it was in my zone angling into me. I was going to try [and] hit it over the top and [that is] exactly what I did. I wanted to make sure I got to the century before I celebrated it.
On the ease with which the Australians scored runs
As we say at the WACA, anything that goes past the in-field is going to be four […]
On whether he thought he was going to go off the field after getting hit by a bouncer
Never, you always want to carry on [but] it’s a bit dangerous when you get hit in the head. If you get hit in a certain spot it could be blurry and I was fine. I was just a bit shaken up and kept fighting on.
On a fresh start on Day 2
Hundred percent […] We start out from zero.
