India v England: A numbers guide
Summary

A quick look at the statistical highlights of the memorable encounter between India and England

Bengaluru, Feb 27: The India – England day/night match of the 2011 ICC World Cup that ended in a tie, proved to be a statistical delight with all the high scores aggregated by both teams. Not only did the match produce the highest aggregate of runs in a World Cup game, but some remarkable individual highs as well. Here is a quick overview of some of the numerical records that were achieved at the end of this memorable game:

2: Andrew Strauss became the first captain to make two scores of 150 or more in ODIs. He had also made 154 against Bangladesh at Birmingham in 2010.

4: Number of tied matches in the World Cup. The other three instances are: Australia v South Africa at Birmingham in 1999, Sri Lanka v South Africa in 2003 and Ireland v Zimbabwe at Kingston in 2007.

5: Number of centuries scored by Sachin Tendulkar in the World Cup – most by any batsman. His 120 today took him past Ricky Ponting, Mark Waugh and former teammate Sourav Ganguly, who each have four centuries against their names.

91: Runs conceded by James Anderson – worst bowling performance by an England bowler in the World Cup. Derek Pringle had conceded 83 runs against West Indies at Gujranwala in 1987.

158: Andrew Strauss’ innings is now the highest individual innings in a chase in the World Cup. Zimbabwe’s David Houghton had made 142 against New Zealand at Hyderabad in 1987.

170: The partnership between Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell is England’s highest for the third wicket against any country in the World Cup. The pair obliterated the previous record stand of 143 between Graeme Hick and Graham Thorpe against Netherlands at Peshawar in 1996.

338: Both sides made their highest totals against each other in the World Cup. For England, it was in fact their highest total against India in all ODIs. In World Cup, India’s previous highest against England was 250 for 9 at Durban in 2003, whereas England’s previous highest against India was 334 for 4 at Lord’s in 1975.

England now hold the record of putting on the highest ever chase in the World Cup history. Sri Lanka had made 313 for seven against Zimbabwe at New Plymouth in 1992.

676:The match aggregated of 676 for 18 is a new record in World Cup history. The Australia- South Africa match at Basseterre in 2007 had produced 671 runs for the loss of 16 wickets.
