‘India were outplayed’
Summary

Shastri disappointed with the way the Indian innings capitulated

Nottingham Aug 1: India were beaten into submission on Day 4 of the second Test match at Trent Bridge by the England pace battery. The trio of Tim Bresnan, James Anderson and Stuart Broad bounced India out of the match, exposing India’s weakness against short pitched deliveries.

Ravi Shastri analysed the game for www.bcci.tv in an exclusive interview.

Excerpts:

On England outplaying India

No question about that; they [England] were the better team and they outplayed India. This is a massive defeat. What disappointed me today was how quickly [the Indian innings] came to an end rather than showing a stomach for a fight. That’s worrying because [of] some of the players getting out the way they did to some planned bowling by England; [the] way they pitched [the ball], they bowled some short deliveries and got the batsmen out. That is a little worrying going into the next Test match at Birmingham because if England leave some grass on that surface as well, they are going to put some serious pressure on India.

On Tim Bresnan who had a good day with the bat and the ball

Not often do you get a chance to score a hundred as well as take five wickets on the same day. He almost did that and in the second innings his effort went a long way in ensuring that the game got over today.

On India losing wickets to the new ball

I said even yesterday that this is a new ball surface and if you have seen through the last three days, it’s the new ball that has done the damage. It did the damage in the first innings, the second new ball, [when] Broad took five wickets for no runs. [Then] again today [the] new ball [did the trick]. India lost too many wickets today in those first 20 overs. If they had lost just one or two wickets, then I would have seen this game going into the fifth day easily.

On the importance of MS Dhoni’s personal form

It is worrying because it is having an effect on his wicketkeeping as well. There is absolutely no doubt about that and he is a proud leader and wants to lead from the front and getting runs will be a huge bonus.

On whether India can make a comeback in the series

They will have to do it quite immediately in Edgbaston. They will have to come up with the goods, they will need their best side in the park, go out there and play some solid cricket.
