India Women register big win in Asia Cup opener
Summary

Mithali, Mandhana star as Bangladesh lose by 64 runs

India opened their account in the ACC Women's Asia Cup T20 with a 64-run win against Bangladesh after setting the opposition a 119-run target. Mithali Raj set up the game for India with an unbeaten 49-run knock while the Jhulan Goswami-led attack bowled the opposition out for 54 to register a thumping victory. Back in the side, Mithali anchored the Indian innings after India were asked to bat by Bangladesh. Opening the innings with Smriti Mandhana, the senior batter held up one end while the left-hand bat scored a 32-ball 41 in the 70-run partnership until she was sent back by Jahanara Alam in the 13th over. Veda Krishnamurthy followed her back into the dug-out after chipping in with five runs before being run out. Harmanpreet Kaur, who then joined Mithali in the middle helped add 29 runs to the total until she was stumped off Ritu Moni in the penultimate over. As wickets continued to tumble, India couldn’t captalise on the solid start in the latter overs. In the last over, off-spinner Khadija Tul Kubra accounted for S Meghana and Goswami while Anuja Patil was run out on the last ball. Defending 118 runs, Goswami dealt early blows by claiming Nighar Sultana in the first over and bowled Sanjida Islam a bit later to leave Bangladesh on six for the loss of two wickets. Skipper Rumana Ahmed was the next to return to the pavilion seven runs later. Salma Khatun then joined Shaila Sharmin in an effort to revive the innings, but 29 runs later, Poonam Yadav ended the blossoming stand by accounting for both batters off successive deliveries. The double blow left Bangladesh reeling on 42 for five. In her next over, the spinner had Ayashya Rahman stumped for six. Mansi Joshi then bowled Moni in the next over while Patil followed up with the wicket of Alam leaving the team on 52 for the loss of nine wickets in the 18th over. Ekta Bisht then wrapped up the game by disrupting Panna Gosh’s stumps with 10 balls left in the innings.
