Bengal and Assam qualified for the Vijay Hazare Trophy from the East Zone after the penultimate day of the Inter-State One-Day League.
Bengal v Assam
Bengal dismissed Assam for 167 after Shreevats Goswami (69) and Wriddhiman Saha (72) helped the home side reach a total of 236 after batting first. Left-arm spinner Deepak Gohain was the top wicket-taker for Assam with 3 for 62 off 10 overs. Pallavkumar Das (38) and Tarjinder Singh (30) got the starts but couldn’t save Assam from a 69-run defeat. Shami Ahmed (2 for 34), Sanjib Sanyal (2 for 26) and Iresh Saxena (2 for 24) shared two wickets each for Bengal.
Jharkhand v Orissa
Orissa skipper Bilap Samantray’s decision to field first stood vindicated as his team chased down a tricky 254 in 42.3 overs to register a five-wicket win over Jharkhand. Kumar Deobrat’s fighting innings of 72 went in vain as well as Saurabh Tiwary’s sedate 53. While Samantray put in a captain’s performance, claiming 3 for 38 in his nine overs. Paresh Patel (79) and Sujit Lenka (56*) led the way for Orissa to chase down the total.
