ROI beat Rajasthan to lift Irani Cup 2011-12
Jaipur, Oct 5: The Rest of India (ROI) side beat Ranji Trophy Champions Rajasthan by 404 runs to lift the Irani Cup 2011-12 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium here today.
Trailing by 590 runs with all wickets intact, Rajasthan had an outside chance of saving the match by when they began the day. However, the Ranji champions were unable to withstand the formidable ROI bowling attack and were subjected to a massive defeat.
Pragyan Ojha, who had done the bulk of the damage in Rajasthan’s first innings by claiming a five-for, today picked four wickets. He was duly supported in the demolition of the Rajasthan batting by the other ROI bowlers. Rahul Sharma and Umesh Yadav picked two wickets apiece while Vinay Kumar and Varun Aaron took one each.
After being involved in a 48-run partnership for the first wicket, Aakash Chopra was the first to return to the dressing room edging Ojha to Ajinkya Rahane in the slips. He was soon followed back by skipper Hrishikesh Kanitkar who was done in by the extra bounce generated by pacer Umesh Yadav.
Later, Rashmi Parida and Ashok Menaria tried to stem the fall of wickets with a 52-run stand, but Yadav struck to claim Menaria. Rohit Jhalani, who replaced him at the crease, was trapped lbw by Sharma for naught while Parida was sent back for 37 by Ojha.
No. 8 batsman Madhur Khatri (53 off 98 balls) showed some resistance by scoring a half-century even as Rajasthan wickets fell all around him; but his valiant effort went in vain as Rajasthan were eventually knocked out for just 213 runs.
