Ishant 2.0 impresses again in Sabina Park
Summary

Indian quicks torment the top-order as R Ashwin’s five-for cleans up WI for 196

Sabina Park has a reputation for being quick. Sabina Park is a venue where fast bowlers can be ruthless. West Indies great Sir Wes Hall has three five-wicket hauls here while Courtney Walsh has 48 wickets apart from an end named after him. Malcolm Marshall has 31 wickets and Jerome Taylor once took nine wickets in a Test match. When India were asked to bowl first in the second Test on Saturday morning, the fast bowlers brought back the memories when menacing pace made batsmen squirm. Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami made full use of the early moisture in the pitch and bowled a terrific line. They bowled with intent from both the ends reducing the West Indies to three for just seven runs. Ishant struck twice in his second over and almost got a hat-trick when local hero Marlon Samuels was stuck on the pads on the pads on the first ball he faced, but survived as the contact was a bit high. While Indians bowled to a plan, the home team looked clueless after losing the top three. Local boy Jermaine Blackwood threw his bat around on deliveries pitched outside off and though his counter-attack resulted in a half-century (62), he looked edgy. Opener Kraigg Brathwaite was peppered with the short ball aimed at his ribs and he ended up giving a catch to Cheteshwar Pujara at short-leg. For Darren Bravo, Ishant went around the stumps, got the left-hander to drive and captain Virat Kohli executed the dismissal with a fine catch in the second slip. “That was the plan and I know my strength. I can take the ball away from the left-hander bowling around the wicket. You need to know your strengths and bowl accordingly and when the captain gives the field you want, there is nothing like it,” Ishant told BCCI.TV after the first day’s play. Ishant’s first four overs put the home team on the back foot. He gave away only four runs and took two wickets. From the other end, Shami conceded just 12 runs from his five overs. Asked if the two had started in hunting in pair post Shami’s injury layoff, Ishant said, “More importantly, we're bowling consistently. One day he picks wickets and on the other days I get wickets and it works the same for Umesh (Yadav). You have to keep hitting those areas and keep persisting with the same line and length and you will be rewarded.” He praised Shami for his disciplined effort in the first Test and also in the ongoing match. “He is bowling very well. Playing after so long, he knows that you need to be bowling at a consistent length for a longer period. He is hitting the lengths well. He understands when you need to be aggressive and when is the time to be defensive.” With fast bowlers providing early breakthroughs, R Ashwin made sure India did not allow any leeway with his 18th five-wicket haul. “I don't need to say anything about him. His stats say everything about him. He is the No. 1 bowler in the world.”
