It was Sachin's dream: Yuvraj
Summary

Recapture Team India’s World Cup tribute to the glorious Tendulkar

Mumbai, April 2: Who can forget the night of April 2, 2011? The roads outside the Wankhede Stadium, and those across the nation, resounded with the joy triggered by India’s ODI World Cup-win. As fans gathered to celebrate the success of the Indian team, members of the winning side savoured the moment with a sense of joy and achievement. We look back at what some of them had to say right after that hard-fought win against Sri Lanka.

Virat Kohli:It is a wonderful feeling. This World Cup goes out to all the people of India who have come here to support us. It’s my first World Cup and we won, so I cannot ask for anything else.

Sachin [Tendulkar] has carried the burden of the entire nation for the last 21 years. So now it was our time to carry him on our shoulders.

Harbhajan Singh:I thank all the Indians in India, and also abroad, who have been with us and supported us. I love them all and I know without their support this wouldn’t have been possible. This cup is for them.

Zaheer Khan:It’s been amazing, it’s a dream come true. We all were working so hard for this and we wanted it so badly. I’m glad we achieved it, especially for the special man here [Tendulkar]. We’re very happy for him and the whole team. I have no words to express the feeling. When Yuvraj was going through a rough phase, I told him he’ll win us the cup.

Yuvraj Singh:It’s been an unbelievable journey the past year. We’re the champions. It’s a dream come true. It was Sachin’s dream to win the cup and we did it for him.

Virender Sehwag:A year ago when we were playing in Dambulla, we had had set a goal and had visualised ourselves playing in the 2011 World Cup final at the Wankhede Stadium and winning it. We were determined to win this and we prepared well for it.

Nothing came easy. It was challenging, especially in the quarter-final. But Sachin, Gautam [Gambhir] and Yuvraj batted well to bail us out chasing against Australia on a difficult track. Right through the tournament it was a team effort. We batted brilliantly, the bowlers did well at different points and today we fielded really fantastically. The 38-year-old Tendulkar was diving at the ropes to save runs and the young boys were terrific inside the ring. We did everything perfectly and gave it our all.

Gautam Gambhir:The feeling is yet to sink in. The guys who were part of the 2007 World Cup experienced the opposite feeling. That was a nightmare and this is a dream. And all credit goes to Sachin Tendulkar. We wanted to do this for him and this cup is for him.
