Bengal push Gujarat on back foot; Delhi in control against MP
While an individual century is still to be posted in Vidarbha, half-centuries by Mayank Agarwal, K Abbas, CM Gautam and an unbeaten 80 by Shreyas Gopal has kept Karnataka in an advantageous position at the end of second day in their quarterfinal clash against Mumbai. Kunal Chandela and Dhruv Shorey have helped Delhi stay on course against MP while the match between Kerala and Vidarbha is evenly poised. Bengal have seized the advantage in the match against Gujarat, courtesy B Amit’s three quick wickets later in the day after Ishan Porel claimed the crucial wicket of Parthiv Patel. Here are the highlights Ranji Trophy 2017-18, Quarter-finals - Day 2: Karnataka vs Mumbai in Vidarbha: Karnataka were leading by 222 runs with four wickets in hand at Stumps with Shreyas Gopal (80*) and Vinay Kumar (31*) in the middle. Resuming on 115 for one, the batsmen ensured that they build on the advantage set by the bowlers. Mayank Agarwal who was batting fluently was the first to depart in the morning edging Shivam Malhotra to the wicketkeeper for 78 leaving the team on 135 for two. Karun Nair was the next to the return to the pavilion; trapped leg before wicket by his fellow debutant Shivam Dube. After 22 runs, he also accounted for Pavan Deshpande to live Karnataka on 183 for four. After adding 35 runs to the tally for the fifth wicket with CM Gautam, K Abbas was also trapped lbw by Dube. With the team on 218 for five, Shreyas Gopal joined Gautam in the middle. The pair stitched a 103-run partnership steadily to keep the balance tipped in Karnataka’s favour. After Gautam was dismissed by Dube for 79, captain Vinay Kumar joined Gopal in the middle. An able bat, Vinay forged a stand with Gopal in an effort to build on the lead. Batting at an unhurried pace, the duo ensured that Karnataka maintain the upper-hand in the all important game. Their partnership was unbroken on 74 as they saw the team through to the end of day’s play at 395 for six. Although Dhawal Kulkarni, who had kept the batsmen on a tight leash, went wicketless, Dube picked up his maiden five-wicket haul for Mumbai. Earlier, after resuming on 45 for three, Vidarbha plodded on to post a modest first innings total on the board. Jalaj Saxena accounted for G Satish to leave Vidarbha on 61 for four and 26 runs later, A Wankhede was sent back by Akshay KC. Saxena then followed up with the wicket of Karn Sharma to leave the side tottering on 95 for six. A Sarvate then joined A Wadkar in the middle and the duo built a 74-run stand in an effort to keep the innings in the fray until the later was sent back by Akshay KC. He followed up with the wicket of R Gurbani to leave the side on 183 for eight. Ten runs later, Basil Thampi ended Wadkar’s resistance for 53 off 147. Jalaj Saxena later accounted for Lalit Yadav to bowl Vidarbha out. As he helped wrap-up the Vidarbha innings, Akashay KC finished with a five-for while Saxena picked three. Although they had lost the experienced Gautam Gambhir with just six runs on the board, the 145-run partnership between Chandela and Dhruv Shorey helped Delhi lay a solid foundation to shape a reply. Earlier on the second morning after resuming on 223 for six, Harpreet Singh Bhatia, who was batting on 47 when play restarted in the morning, anchored the innings to 338 with a century. Delhi’s Manan Sharma finished with a four-wicket haul as he ran through the lower-order to bring curtains down on the MP innings. Ashok Dinda struck in the first over to remove SB Gohil without a run on the board and 17 runs later, Ishan Porel claimed Priyank Panchal to push the defending champions on the back-foot. Parthiv Patel then joined B Merai in rebuilding the innings. The pair had added 107-runs for the third wicket until the Gujarat skipper was sent back by Porel for 47 leaving the side on 124 for three. Three quick wickets followed and Gujarat were reeling on 144 for six. B Amit claimed Manprit Juneja, Merai and Chirag Gandhi to tip the balance in Bengal’s favour. When play ended for the day, R Bhatt was batting with Piyush Chawla in the middle. Earlier after resuming on 261 for six, useful contributions by the lower-order helped Bengal post a respectable total on board. Last to return to the pavilion, Aamir Gani made 49 until CT Gaja ended his innings to wrap-up the Bengal innings. Amit contributed a useful 36 too.
