Raina ready for responsibilities as a senior; Dhawan confident of striking form; Bhuvi says he’s fit

Suresh Raina may not have set the ODI scene on fire of late, but one can never write him off when he dons that blue jersey and walks out to bat. It is a young and rejuvenated side that is looking forward to a successful World Cup defence. Raina, no stranger to the World Cup, was part of the 2011 World Cup winning team and is looking forward to attaining success this time as well. But much has changed since the last World Cup; only four members of the class of 2011 are a part this squad and Raina is one of them. The role of the ‘senior’ ones becomes even more important. Raina cites team meetings and bonding as the key factors for a good World Cup campaign. “In the 2011 World Cup, we had a lot of meetings and Sachin Tendulkar led most of them. I spent a lot of time with Gary Kirsten and Yuvraj Singh in that World Cup. Yuvi was batting in the middle-order with me that time,” Raina said. “I have learnt from Dhoni and Yuvi to play free cricket. In the previous World Cup, Yuvi finished games well with the bat and Zaheer did the job with the ball. “But now this is a new team and we’ve got to be in the present and not think too far ahead. This World cup is going to be different with two new balls and new rules and we need to back ourselves and our strengths. “It is a fresh tournament and we are ready to go. We are young and we have got a lot of time to bond within ourselves. We are hungry and ready to enjoy ourselves. The World Cup is the biggest tournament for us now. We need to look to be positive all the time and enjoy each other’s company.” Raina was also of the view that there were no changes in his role or responsibilities from the 2011 World Cup. “The responsibilities are the same irrespective of the tournament and age. 2011 was different since there were a lot of seniors in the side. This World Cup I won’t call myself a senior but I do have a good camaraderie with the younger guys in the side as compared to 2011. Then I mostly listened to things but this time I can talk to the youngsters, which is an extra responsibility. We have a good team and hopefully we will do well in the tournament.” If Raina spoke about team bonding and taking up responsibility, Shikhar Dhawan was ready to put his bad run behind and look forward and beyond. Having been the toast of the ICC Champions trophy in England in 2013, Dhawan felt his form is just round the corner. “The ICC Champions Trophy was a long time ago and I have got good memories of the tournament,” Dhawan said. “I am looking forward to the World Cup and bat for long in the middle. I have gone through some rough patches but I have learnt from them. I cherish my hard times the way I cherish my good times. Things can change anytime and I want to go with the flow. All we would like to say is keep the faith in us.” Meanwhile, Bhuvneshwar Kumar who has been out of action for quite some time now also deemed himself fit and raring to go. “I have fully recovered at the moment. The last three four days have been really good for me and I am ready to play.”
