New Zealand declare on 324/7, Mumbai’s Sandhu claims Guptill & Williamson
Mumbai XI were 29 for one at stumps on Day 1 after New Zealand posted 324 runs before declaring their first innings. Balwinder Sandhu (2/21) was the pick of the Mumbai XI bowlers while Tom Latham and Kane Williamson scored half-centuries after Aditya Tare elected to field in three-day warm up game at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi. In the 15 players-per-side match with 11 players on field and 11 batting, Mumbai used nine bowlers as they looked to restrict the Kane Williamson-led team. Making the most of the conditions in the morning, Sandhu got Mumbai XI off to a good start. The pacer forced an edge from Martin Guptill to the wicketkeeper to leave NZ on 30 for the loss of one wicket. Williamson, who then took guard, made 50 off 56 balls, before being sent back by the bowler. “It was about sticking to our plans as discussed in the team meeting earlier. So I stuck to the basics and didn’t try anything different. The plan was executed well with the new ball,” Sandhu said. Speaking about the wicket of Guptill, he said, “It was basic; to try and hit the good length areas and bowl at the fourth stump and that worked.”
While the opener departed early, the captain set the momentum for the innings with a breezy knock. While Williamson milked the bowlers at will, Latham patiently held up one end. After the departure of his skipper, the opener took the team to lunch at 117 for two with Ross Taylor. Early into the second session, Latham brought up his 50 and a while later on 55, retired making way for Henry Nicholls. Taylor, who had gleaned runs with ease en route to his 41, was the next to return to the dressing room; trapped lbw by Vijay Gohil with the team on 184. Nicholls followed him back 26 runs later, trapped lbw by part-time bowler Siddhesh Lad. Mitchell Santner then joined BJ Watling in the middle and the New Zealand batsmen comfortably scored off the Mumbai attack as the innings progressed. The team was on 235 in 59 overs at tea. Watling who was batting on 21 at the end of the second session did not come out to bat when play resumed in the final session. With the No 6 batsman retiring, Mark Craig joined Santner in the final session to carry the innings forward. The No 7 batsman was five short of his half-century when he lofted Vishal Dabholkar to long-off where Gohil took the catch. Craig and Ish Sodhi then took the visitors past the 300-run mark and were batting on 33 and 29 respectively when the visiting team declared their first innings.
Trent Boult then drew an edge from Jay Bista through to the wicketkeeper off the third delivery of the innings without a run on the board. Armaan Jaffer then negotiated the New Zealand attack with gusto as he took the team to stumps in an unbroken stand with Kaustubh Pawar. Brief scores: Day 1 - NZ 1st inn 324/7 decl. in 75 overs (T Latham 55, K Williamson 50, B Sandhu 2/21); Mum 1st inn 29/1 in 13 overs (A Jaffer 24*, K Pawar 5, T Boult 1/5) Trail by 295 runs.
