Match Report: Bangladesh v West Indies
Summary

Bangladesh crash to embarrassing nine-wicket defeat

Mirpur, March 4: Hosts Bangladesh suffered the ignominy of folding for the lowest ever score by a full member nation in World Cup history when they were bowled out for a measly 58 runs by West Indies in a Group B 2011 ICC World Cup encounter. The Caribbean side put up a commanding performance, chasing down the target in just 12.2 overs.

The only thing that went in Bangladesh’s favour today was the toss with captain Shakib Al Hasan opting to bat first. West Indies were at their destructive best right from the start. Opener Tamim Iqbal (0) was dismissed by Kemar Roach off just the third delivery of the morning while Imrul Kayes (5) fell in the fourth over of the day to Darren Sammy.

Junaid Siddique made 25 but no other Bangladeshi batsman managed a double digit score other than him and Mohammad Ashraful (11). From a score of 5/51, Bangladesh were bowled out for just 58 runs as left-arm spinner Suleiman Benn ran through the lower order finishing off with three wickets.

Chris Gayle took West Indies to the victory target with minimal effort as he slammed his way to a 36-ball innings of 37 runs. Gayle also went past the 8000 run mark in ODI cricket during the course of his innings. Devon Smith (6) was the only West Indies wicket to fall during the run chase, the opener falling to Bangladeshi offspinner Naeem Islam.

The significance of West Indies’ victory margin can also be gauged by the fact that the entire game lasted just 31.1 overs.

West Indies, who have now played three games, move to the second spot in Group B with two wins while Bangladesh languish at the second last spot in the same Group, just above Netherlands.

Brief scores:West Indies 59 for one in 12.2 overs (Chris Gayle 37*, Naeem Islam 1/14) beat Bangladesh 58 all out in 18.5 overs (Junaid Siddique 25, Kemar Roach 3/19, Sulieman Benn 4/18, Darren Sammy 3/21) by nine wickets

Man-of-the-Match: Kemar Roach for his outstanding bowling figures of 6-0-19-3
