Match report: Eng v Ind, 2nd Test - Day 4
Summary

England beat India comprehensively with a day to spare

Nottingham, Aug 1: England won the second Test match of the four-match series by 319 runs to take a 2-0 lead. Failing to negotiate short pitched deliveries, the Indian team catapulted for 158 runs in 47.4 overs on Day 4. Tim Bresnan, who had replaced an injured Chris Tremlett in the England squad, impressed with a five-wicket haul while Stuart Broad and James Anderson took two and three wickets respectively to end the Indian innings prematurely.

The only Indian batsman who stood up to England’s pace battery was Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar top-scored for India in the second innings with a masterful 56 runs until James Anderson claimed him lbw. With Tendulkar gone, the Indian tail was exposed in the 36th over of the innings and all hopes of India taking the game into the fifth day destroyed.

Earlier, adding 103 runs to their overnight lead of 374, England were all out for 544 runs about 30 minutes before lunch.

After Praveen Kumar removed Matt Prior early, Stuart Broad was run out by a brilliant piece of fielding by (subsitute) Wriddhiman Saha. Tim Bresnan was dismissed for 90 runs off the next ball by Kumar. Ishant Sharma then claimed the wicket of Graeme Swann to bring an end to the England innings. India were set a stiff target of 478 runs.

With about 20 minutes of play left before lunch, Rahul Dravid and Abhinav Mukund opened the second innings for India. Mukund was dropped off James Anderson off the very first ball of the innings; the ball kissed the outside edge, Bresnan and Andrew Strauss both missed the catch in the slips and Mukund was saved from scoring a golden pair.

India’s luck, though, didn’t last much longer. A little later, Stuart Broad dealt a huge blow by claiming the prized wicket of Rahul Dravid (6 runs) before lunch was called.

Drama continued after lunch as Anderson uprooted VVS Laxman's (4 runs) off-stump in the second over of the session. With two of their key players back in the hut for just 13 runs on the board and more than a day and a half remaining, the target looked even more daunting.

Tim Bresnan then got into the act and dismissed Abhinav Mukund and Suresh Raina in consecutive overs. A bouncer from Bresnan saw the back of Mukund; the youngster was unable to fend off a rising delivery. Suresh Raina, on the other hand, top-edged a ball that landed in the hands of fine-leg and India were floundering at 37 runs for the loss of four wickets.

The loss of Raina brought another left-hander, Yuvraj Singh, to the crease. After an 18-run partnership with Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh departed for eight runs. Having negotiated the short ball for some time, Yuvraj Singh was clueless against the bouncer from Bresnan; Singh’s catch was taken safely by Alastair Cook. With the very next ball, Bresnan trapped skipper MS Dhoni lbw, but the bowler missed out on a hat-trick. With the departure of the Indian skipper, India were tottering at 55 for the loss of six wickets and Bresnan had pocketed a four-for.

Harbhajan Singh came out in the middle to join Tendulkar and the two put on a 52-run partnership until the latter departed ringing the death knell for the Indian side. After swinging his bat freely, hitting a few boundaries and surviving a dropped catch, Harbhajan Singh (46 runs) became Bresnan’s fifth scalp and followed Tendulkar back to the pavilion.

Towards the end of the final session of the day, Anderson yorked Praveen Kumar while Broad bowled S Sreesanth to wrap up the Indian innings.

Brief Score (At the end of Day 4): England 1st innings 221 all out in 68.4 overs (Stuart Broad 64, A Strauss 32, P Kumar 3/45, I Sharma 3/66, S Sreesanth 3/77), India 1st innings 288 all out in 91.1 overs (Rahul Dravid 117, Yuvraj Singh 62, VVS Laxman 54, Stuart Broad 6/46); England 2nd Innings 544 all out in 120.2 overs ( Ian Bell 159, Tim Bresnan 90, Eoin Morgan 70, Kevin Pietersen 63, Matt Prior 64, Praveen Kumar 4/124), India 2nd innings 158 all out in 47.4 overs (Sachin Tendulkar 56, Tim Bresnan 5/48, J Anderson 3/51)

Man-of-the-Match: Stuart Broad for a magnificent all-round performance which included a hat-trick on Day 3

Recap:

Day 1 - The Indian pace battery exploited the overcast conditions in Trent Bridge and had England tottering at 124 runs at the loss of eight wickets at tea on Day 1. But a counter-attack from Stuart Broad, with the tail-enders for company, saw the hosts reach 221 despite the odds.

Day 2 - A hat-trick from Stuart Broad and suspect shot selection by the Indian lower order allowed England to wrap up the Indian innings for 288 runs after the visitors were safely poised on 267 for the loss of four wickets. Asked to bat for 11 overs, England lost the wicket of Alastair Cook in the final hour of play; they trailed India by 43 runs at stumps on Day 2.

Day 3 - Ian Bell’s brilliant 159 was the highlight of the third day of the second Test match at Trent Bridge. But MS Dhoni enjoyed a fair share of the spotlight, choosing to uphold the spirit of the game by withdrawing an appeal that had brought Bell’s innings to a bizarre end before tea. At the end of Day 3, England were leading by 374 runs with Matt Prior not out on 64 and Tim Bresnan batting on 47.
