Taylor stars as England win series 2-0
Mumbai desk, June 28: Yet another superb innings by Sarah Taylor helped England beat India by eight wickets to win the T20I series 2-0.
Chasing 115 at County Ground in Chelmsford, England reached the target with 17 balls to spare courtesy an unbeaten 67 by Taylor and 30 not out by Lydia Greenway. Although Laura Marsh was run out for five in the fourth over, Charlotte Edwards contributed a valuable 15 off 14 with three boundaries before being trapped lbw by N Niranjana. Taylor and Greenway then ensured a smooth England victory with a 85-run unbroken partnership. During her 48-ball stay at the crease, the wicketkeeper slammed nine boundaries and was ably supported by Greenway who hit two fours in her 31-ball innings.
Earlier, Mithali Raj’s luck with the toss continued. Having chosen to field in the first match, the Indian skipper opted to bat first in the second match but that did nothing to change the outcome. The batsmen failed to set a formidable target, managing to reach only 114 at the end of their 20 overs with the 10th wicket falling off the last delivery.
The visitors lost Amita Sharma in the first over without a run on the board as the India opener edged Katherine Brunt to the wicketkeeper. Poonam Raut and Raj then put together 37 runs before Raj was dismissed by Danielle Wyatt. Raut followed her back after adding just one run to the total. One of India’s more consistent performers in recent times, vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur, and Mona Meshram took India to 89 until the latter was claimed by Arran Brindle. Sulakshana Naik was run out in the next over while Kaur and Jhulan Goswami fell to Brunt in the penultimate over. With the score on 103 for seven after 19 overs, N Niranjana, Ekta Bisht and Archana Das were run out in a hurry taking the tally of run outs to five in the innings.
With five ODIs still to go, the visitors will be looking to forget the T20 drubbing and put up a far superior show in all departments.
Brief scores: India 114 all out in 20 overs (H Kaur 34, K Brunt 3/18) lost to England 117/2 in 17.1 overs (S Taylor 67*, L Greenway 30*) by 8 wickets
