England hand HCA side 56-run defeat in practice game
Hyderabad, Oct 8: England XI beat Hyderabad Cricket Association XI in the first practice game for the touring side by 56 runs ahead of the five-match ODI series between India and England.
Chasing a modest 220 runs to win at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, the HCA XI were bundled out for 163 run in 36.5 overs.
After the hosts lost both the openers – Akshath Reddy and Ravi Teja – with just 12 runs on the board, Neeraj Bist and Arjun Yadav stitched together a 55-run partnership; but Samit Patel struck to send back the former for 29 runs. Soon after, HCA lost Mohammed Khader and Ibrahim Khaleel to Chris Woakes off consecutive deliveries.
The hosts were floundering at 99 for the loss of five wickets with the departure of Khaleel halfway through the innings. Yadav, who top-scored for HCA XI with a 47-run knock, was run-out by England skipper Alastair Cook.
Much like their senior counterparts in the recently concluded series, the local lads failed to negotiate the England pacers or to build partnerships. Jade Derbach removed Ashish Reddy while Steve Finn, who had earlier removed Ravi Teja, returned to claim Amol Shinde, Pagadala Naidu and Anwar Ahmed. The 22-year-old pacer finished with a four-for at an economy rate of 3.57 runs per over.
Earlier, opting to bat first, England XI were all out for 219 runs in 47.2 overs. Anwar Ahmed claimed the wickets of Cook and the dangerous Kevin Pietersen early on to give the home team important breakthroughs. Jonathon Trott was castled by Naidu while Ashish Reddy followed up with the key wickets of Ian Bell and Jonny Bairstow. The England side were struggling at 82 for the loss of five wickets before Ravi Bopara's 73 off 82 balls and Chris Woakes unbeaten 46 helped them cross the 200-run mark.
Bopara's valiant knock was ended by Ahmed in the 37th over while Woakes was left stranded at one end as he ran out of batting partners. Left-arm pacer Khader sent back the lower order claiming three wickets for 25 runs in six overs while Dernbach, the last wicket to fall, was run-out for one.
The Hyderabad team used as many as seven bowlers to wrap up the England innings with 2.4 overs to spare.
Brief scores: England XI 219 all out in 47.2 overs (R Bopara 73, C Woakes 46*, Anwar Ahmed 3/35, M Khader 3/25) beat Hyderabad Cricket Association XI 163 all out in 36.5 overs (AS Yaday 47, Steve Finn 4/28, C Woakes 2/30) by 56 runs
