Match report: Ind vs Aus – 2nd Test, Day 4
Summary

India go up 2-0 after winning by an innings and 135 runs

With a comprehensive innings and 135-run win against Australia on the fourth day of the second Test at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, the hosts now lead the four-match series 2-0. After Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara set the platform for India with a 370-run partnership, India spun Australia out for 131 runs in the second innings to post their second win the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin claimed a fiver, while Ravindra Jadeja claimed three with his left-arm spin and pacer Ishant Sharma chipped in with one. The win also added another feather in the cap for India’s World Cup winning captain, MS Dhoni, as he has now recorded more Test wins than any of his predecessors.

Earlier, trailing by 192 runs, Australia were precariously perched on 74 for two and faced an uphill task when they resumed their second innings on the fourth morning. Ishant Sharma opened the proceedings for India, and the pacer claimed his first scalp of the series by sending back Shane Watson in his second over. The batsman nicked a delivery going down the leg side and skipper MS Dhoni took a good catch diving to his left, behind the stumps. Michael Clarke, who then took guard, departed early. Ravindra Jadeja knocked back the Australian captain’s off-stump with his left-arm spin, and in his next followed up with the wicket of Ed Cowan. Virender Sehwag took a catch at first slip to send back the opener who had until then held up one end with a valiant 44. Finding himself in thick of things, Jadeja ran out Moises Henriques, who had shown the ability to fight back in his debut game at Chennai.

Later, Ravichandran Ashwin trapped Glenn Maxwell leg-before, bringing India within reach of an innings victory. In a fantastic display of fielding, Virat Kohli then pulled off a superb one-handed catch to send back Peter Siddle off Jadeja’s bowling. Wade followed Siddle back to the hut on the first ball of the next over. The Australian wicketkeeper edged Ashwin to Sehwag at slip to walk back for 10 and leave the visitors on 130 for nine. The last pair of James Pattinson and Xavier Doherty then extended the innings by little over seven overs, until Ashwin struck a few minutes into extended time before lunch to wrap up the Australian innings. The off-spinner claimed Pattinson lbw to take India to victory with more than a day and half to spare.

Man of the Match: Cheteshwar Pujara for his brilliant double-hundred, which helped set the stage for the win.
