Match Report: SA v Ind, 1st Test - Day 3
Summary

South Africa declare with 484-run lead, India 190/2 at close

Centurion, Dec 18: India were 190 runs for the loss of the openers in their second innings at SuperSport Park after South Africa declared their innings having posted a mammoth total of 620/4 earlier in the day. The visitors were still 294 runs behind South Africa on the third day of the first Test.

Rahul Dravid (28) and night watchman Ishant Sharma (7) were at the crease at the close of Day 3.

Gautam Gambhir, who batted beautifully for his 80, was trapped LBW when Dale Steyn bowled around the wicket, the change of angle doing the trick for the hosts.

Virender Sehwag, who shared an opening wicket partnership of 137 runs with Gambhir, departed for 63 when he tried to hit Harris out of the park and skied one to Graeme Smith.

Resuming after Lunch, Jacques Kallis went on post his first ever double century in Test cricket. His unbeaten knock of 201 came off just 270 deliveries and included 15 fours and five sixes. With that individual milestone out of the way, the Proteas declared their innings at the fall of AB de Villiers’ wicket - the Pretorian had hammered 129 runs off just 112 balls (12X4, 5X6).

India then began their second innings with Gautam Gambhir playing cautiously, while Virender Sehwag was his usual cavalier self. He reached his half-century in just 46 deliveries and even hit Lonwabo Tsotsobe for a six off just the second ball of the left-arm seamer’s spell. The duo put on 92 runs for the first wicket when play broke for Tea.

Earlier, Hashim Amla carried on from South Africa’s overnight score of 366 for two, cracking five boundaries, mostly on the off side, within the first few overs of the day’s play. He might have gone on to score much more, but edged an Ishant Sharma delivery, way down the leg side, that ended up safe in wicketkeeper MS Dhoni’s hands. Amla made 140 and his partnership with Kallis contributed 230 runs to South Africa’s cause.

AB de Villiers then arrived at the wicket with the score at 396. Taking barely any time to settle in he went after the Indian bowlers with disdain.

There were some exquisite drives against the fast bowlers initially which were followed by four towering sixes between long-on and mid-wicket when Suresh Raina was brought into the attack. He reached his century in just 76 deliveries.

Kallis, too, played at his usual brisk rate, though, in comparison to de Villiers, his innings appeared rather sedate. He brought up his 150, by hitting Raina for a boundary between deep cover and long-off, in 210 deliveries.

South Africa went in to Lunch with the score at 591/3 with India having conceded as many as 225 runs in just 36 overs in that session.
