Bad light forces early end after Steyn, Tsotsobe...
Durban, Dec 26: Play was called off due to bad light on Day 1 with India struggling at 183 for six in the second Test against South Africa at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Sunday.
Dhoni was not out on 20 while Harbhajan was batting on 15 when the day’s play came to a premature end.
Lonwabo Tsotsobe took two wickets and pulled off an outstanding catch for South Africa while most of the Indian batsmen failed to convert their starts into meaningful scores.
Dale Steyn, on the other hand, took full advantage of an overcast sky and claimed four wickets to push the visitors on the back-foot on Day 1.
VVS Laxman, who was looking good at 38, was outdone by a brilliant Lonwabo Tsotsobe catch at mid-on off Steyn. Rahul Dravid made a gritty 25 before falling to a sharp delivery giving Steyn another big wicket. The paceman bowled a good length ball that bounced a touch more than Dravid expected. The ball clipped Dravid’s gloves and Boucher completed the proceedings to register his 50th dismissal against India.
Tsotsobe contributed significantly with the wicket of Sachin Tendulkar for 13. The batting maestro played a loose shot to a delivery that was angled across – Kallis made no mistake at second slip.
Earlier, speedster Dale Steyn struck twice in quick succession to reduce India to 48 for two in the 13th over.
Steyn continued from where he left off in the Centurion Test and got the better of both the Indian openers - Virender Sehwag and Murali Vijay. Steyn bowled a delivery that swung late to dismiss Vijay - an outside edge landing in Mark Boucher's gloves.
The other opener, Virender Sehwag, played an over-ambitious shot, flashing at an away-swinging delivery outside his off stump to send a thick outside edge to Kallis at second slip.
South Africa, after their comprehensive innings and 25-run win over the visitors in the first Test at Centurion, have retained the same XI. Left-arm swing bowler Lonwabo Tsotsobe has fought off the challenge of Wayne Parnell, for a place in the side, for the moment at least.
India have made three changes to their side for this Test, one of them forced - Murali Vijay has replaced opening batsman Gautam Gambhir who is suffering from a hand injury.
Zaheer Khan and middle-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara have replaced Jaidev Unadkat and Suresh Raina respectively.
