Raina, openers defy Somerset to draw game
Taunton, July 17: Suresh Raina cracked an unbeaten century while openers Gautam Gambhir and Abhinav Mukund struck a defiant 69-run partnership to help India draw their three-day warm-up game against Somerset ahead of the first Test match against England at Lord’s on July 21.
Resuming from an overnight score of 138 for eight, Indian southpaw Suresh Raina cracked a fine century to take the Indian first innings total to 224 all out. Having scored his first 50 off 73 deliveries, Raina required just another 37 balls to score his first century of the tour. In all, Raina helped himself to 14 fours and five sixes in his unbeaten knock of 103. Charl Willoughby took his sixth wicket of the Indian innings when he bowled S Sreesanth (1) early in the morning while Munaf Patel, who faced just 24 balls in his 84-run stand with Raina, was trapped lbw by Max Waller for six.
Somerset then brought up another superlative batting performance in their second innings. Andrew Strauss led the way for the county side, smashing an unbeaten 109 off just 135 deliveries before Somerset declared their innings at 260 for two after 41 overs. The only cheer for India, while Somerset scored at a run-rate of 6.34 runs-per-over, came in the form of the wickets of Arul Suppiah (45) and James Hildreth (0) off consecutive deliveries to legspinner Amit Mishra.
Indian openers Abhinav Mukund (33* off 51) and Gautam Gambhir (36* off 49) then put on a solid batting display, denying Somerset any breakthroughs. The match ended 16.4 overs into India’s second innings with the visitors having reached 69 for no loss.
