Lethal Martin spins WI to 103-run victory
Antigua, June 13: Legspinner Anthony Martin posted career best figures of four for 36 as he helped West Indies record their first win of the five-match ODI series against India at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium here in Antigua. Chasing West Indies’ score of 249, the visitors collapsed to 146 all out as Martin ripped through the Indian middle-order.
The Indian batting was disappointing from the very beginning. Parthiv Patel [26], Virat Kohli [22] and Subramaniam Badrinath [12] all got starts but failed to convert them into something more substantial for the team’s cause. Rohit Sharma, India’s star batsman right through this ODI series, once again, looked the most settled of the lot but got out for 39 as he top edged an Anthony Martin delivery to Darren Bravo.
It was Darren Sammy who did the early damage for the hosts when he accounted for Manoj Tiwary [2] and Parthiv Patel before the first ten overs had been completed. Andre Russell then dismissed Badrinath which set the stage for Martin to rip through India’s middle-order. The legspinner picked up the wickets of Kohli and Suresh Raina [10] before getting rid of Sharma. Yusuf Pathan [1] was dismissed by Lendl Simmons in the only over bowled by him.
Unlike the last match, there were no fight backs in this game for the visitors. From a score of 124 for seven, they were eventually bowled out for a paltry 146 with Martin having last man Ishant Sharma stumped by Carlton Baugh to complete his four-wicket haul in the game.
Earlier, Lendl Simmons and Kieron Pollard struck half-centuries to take the West Indies to a score of 249. Put into bat after Suresh Raina won the toss for the third consecutive time in this series, the West Indies’ batting followed a path similar to their performance in the previous ODI. In the last game, they were 96 for seven with Lendl Simmons [45] putting in the only notable contribution at the top of the order before Andre Russell and Carlton Baugh took them to a respectable score of 225. Today, they collapsed to 103 for five with Lendl Simmons, once again, playing a lone hand right at the top with an innings of 67.
Then Kieron Pollard, with some handy support from Carlton Baugh, brought the hosts back into the game. Pollard, under criticism for having scored a mere six runs cumulatively in his previous two innings in this series, helped himself to a strokeful half-century while striking a 96-run partnership with Baugh off just 17.4 overs. He fell for an individual score of 70, caught at long-off by Ishant Sharma off R Ashwin. The hosts were 199 for six in 44.2 overs at the fall of Pollard’s wicket.
Andre Russell (25 off 14) and Baugh (39 off 57) then added 41 off just four overs to take West Indies to a score of 249 for eight in 50 overs.
For India, Praveen Kumar was the most successful bowler finishing with figures of three for 37. Amit Mishra took two for 56 in his 10 overs.
While India may have lost this game, they still retain a 3-1 lead in the five-match series.
Brief scores: West Indies249/8 in 50.0 overs (Kieron Pollard 70, Lendl Simmons 67, Praveen Kumar 3/37, Amit Mishra 2/56) beat India 146 all out in 39 overs (Rohit Sharma 39, Parthiv Patel 26, Anthony Martin 4/36, Andre Russell 3/16) by 103 runs.
Man-of-the-match: Anthony Martin for his incisive spell of 10-0-36-4 that set up a 103-run victory for the West Indies.
