Match report: WI v India - 2nd Test, Day 1
Summary

West Indies on 30 for three after dismissing India for 201

Barbados, June 28: Batting first at the Kensington Oval, India were all out for 201 runs on Day 1 of the second Test against West Indies. At the end of a hectic day’s play, the hosts had lost three wickets for 30 runs.

After bowling India out in 68 overs, the West Indies came in to bat in the post-tea session. Ishant Sharma dealt the first blow for India with the wicket of Adrian Barath for just three runs. Barath’s partner Lendl Simmons fell to Praveen Kumar soon after. With both openers back in the hut, it was left to Ramnaresh Sarwan and Darren Bravo to see WI through to the end of the day’s play. But with Abhimanyu Mithun claiming Bravo, Devendra Bishoo came to the crease to play the last delivery of the day.

Earlier, the West Indies bowlers exploited the pitch conditions to the hilt in the morning session. Darren Sammy had opted to bowl first after winning the toss seeing the moisture on the track and hoping to put pressure on the Indian batsmen and his bowlers didn’t let him down.

Pacer Ravi Rampaul, returning after an injury ridden two-year break, ran through the Indian top-order and left India tottering at four wickets for just 38 runs in the 26th over. Sammy himself picked the wicket of Rahul Dravid whom he had dropped in the first Test - an error that had cost West Indies the match. The Indian batsmen were found wanting when it came to negotiating the pace and bounce of the wicket.

Newcomer Abhinav Mukund was the first to be sent back by Rampaul with just one run on the board. Vijay, who had braved 74 balls for his 11 runs, was Rampaul’s next wicket. A ball later, Rampaul sent back the new man at the crease, Virat Kohli, for naught.

If it was West Indies all the way in the first session, it was India who ruled the second.

With four early wickets gone, it was left to the experienced VVS Laxman to salvage the Indian innings. If Jamaica witnessed the perfection of Dravid, Barbados saw the elegance of Laxman save the day. The veteran batsmen scored 85 off 146 deliveries with 12 boundaries. He found an able ally in Suresh Raina. The two built a partnership of 117 runs and helped India see the post-lunch session through without losing a wicket. Once again, as he did in the first Test, the southpaw played a valuable innings of 53 runs off 105 balls with seven boundaries before he was given out off Bishoo.

The wicket of Raina triggered a mini collapse as Fidel Edwards claimed the wickets of MS Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh and Abhimanyu Mithun in quick succession.

With nine wickets gone for 189 runs, the 200-run mark seemed daunting for India. But Praveen Kumar, in the company of bowling part Ishant Sharma, saw India reach the milestone in the 67th over. The duo, however, couldn’t take the tally much further and India were all out for 201. Bishoo finished with three wickets; he wrapped up the Indian innings with the wicket of Kumar and had earlier claimed the key wickets of Laxman and Raina.

Brief Score (At the end of Day-1): India 1st Innings 201 all out in 68 overs (VVS Laxman 85, Suresh Raina 53, R Rampaul 3/38, D Bishoo 3/46, Fidel Edwards 3/56); West Indies 1st Innnings 30/3 in 12 overs ( R Sarwan 10, Ishant Sharma 1/8).
